Giving Kids Wings Flight Academy offers elective career aviation training courses at select high schools in Southern California. The courses are open to all enrolled students.
We also offer ground and PC simulator training for individuals and groups, as well as individual student flight training.
In addition, we help students bring learning to life by providing career counseling to those interested in aviation-related fields.
Read on to learn more about the elements of our program, and contact us to learn how you or your student can enroll.
(Is onsite learning a challenge for you? Ask about our options to learn from the comfort of your own home!)
Each student enrolled in our flight program has the opportunity to embark on their first flight lesson in a small aircraft at no charge to the student. During the lesson, the student does most of the taxiing and flying, allowing them to apply the skills they learned on PC simulators in a real aircraft.
Family and friends are welcome to participate in the experience as well and can ride along with their loved one as space is available. The entire flight experience is video recorded, so all involved can relive the excitement again and again!
Once they have completed the basic and advanced ground and simulator courses, students are well ahead of the curve with regard to flight knowledge, procedures, flight skills, and aircraft performance. Having demonstrated the necessary determination and commitment, students are eligible to begin actual career flight training and to apply for financial aid to help reduce the costs.
GKWFA offers professional aviation training for the Private Pilot Certificate, Instrument Rating, Commercial Pilot Certificate, and Certified Flight Instructor Certificate. Students graduating from our program will be qualified to offer professional flight training and will be better able to support themselves as they pursue a college degree in preparation for a career as a professional aviator.
GKWFA provides its students with licensed, comprehensive ground training for the Private Pilot Certificate, Instrument Rating, Commercial Pilot Certificate, and Flight Instructor Certificate.
Among the many areas of training are aircraft equipment, airframe components, flight dynamics, plotting courses, calculating descent and climb rates, and learning emergency procedures. All of these and more allow students to apply algebra, geometry, and physics that they learn in grades nine through twelve in an exciting setting.
Once the private pilot ground school is completed, students may take the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Private Pilot Written Exam to demonstrate mastery of the material. Upon successful completion of the exam, students are eligible to enroll in the Instrument Ground Training course.
In Instrument Ground Training, students gain all of the necessary flight knowledge to become proficient instrument pilots. Navigation by sole reference to instruments, knowledge of IFR flight routes and procedures, entering and maintaining proper holding patterns, interpreting weather minimums for instrument approaches, and communication norms for Air Traffic Control are a few of the crucial things that private pilots must master in order to become instrument rated. Like with the private pilot ground school, upon completing Instrument Ground Training students are eligible to take the FAA Instrument Pilot Written Exam in preparation for Instrument Flight Training.
Ground training for the Commercial Pilot License and the Certified Flight Instructor certificate are currently offered as independent study courses in preparation for the respective FAA exams. In these courses, students study and prepare under the direct supervision of a Certified Flight Instructor.
PC-simulated flight instruction is offered in tandem with the Private Pilot and Instrument Pilot ground training to prepare students for careers in flight. The greatest benefit of training extensively using PC flight training devices for simulated flight training is that it significantly reduces the time and cost of learning maneuvers during actual flight training. Students who complete advanced simulator training can accomplish in a few hours of actual flight instruction what others need many more hours to achieve.
In the private pilot simulator course, students must demonstrate competency in flight dynamics and flight skills by completing all of the maneuvers that real-life pilots must master. Stalls, slow flight, recovery from unusual attitudes, climbing and descending turns, and cross country flights are a few of the many flight skills GKWFA pilots obtain. Like real pilots, they also must learn how to communicate with a control tower, interpret basic meteorology, and prepare for, evaluate, and execute flight related decisions. Learning is progressive: with successful completion of each set of maneuvers, the students proceed to the next set of flight maneuvers.
Planning and executing an instrument flight plan, intercepting VORs, precision approach localizers and glideslopes, and successful navigation of victor airways are among the many things that GKWFA pilots must master to attain what many pilots consider to be the hardest certificate to earn: an Instrument Rating. Like the private pilot training, the instrument training is progressive and responsive to student progress and aptitude.
GKWFA also offers simulated commercial flight training. To earn their simulated Commercial Pilots license, pilots must master flight control and performance to a greater degree of accuracy. Students must log a minimum of 250 hours of simulated flight time in order to be eligible to take the FAA Commercial Pilot practice written exam.
Throughout its history, GKWFA has taken dozens of aviation career field trips to local airports and businesses. Students have explored careers in Aviation Flight, Aviation Management, the Coast Guard, Aviation Maintenance, Air Traffic Control, Aircraft Production, Aerospace Engineering, and many others. GKWFA seeks to bridge the gap between the “real world” and the education world by offering engaging field trips and meaningful community partnerships.
