Founded in 2002, Turning Technologies is headquartered in Youngstown, Ohio. The company began with three goals in mind: to make response technology more affordable, user-friendly, and better documented so that users could easily grasp its benefits. First supported by the Youngstown Business Incubator – a local organization that promotes technology business development – the original team members developed the initial release of popularTurningPoint software in a 12-by-20 foot office. In May of 2008, the company moved next door to the newly constructed Taft Technology Center with 30,000 square feet for additional personnel. With growing international demand, Turning opened its first brick and mortar international office in Amsterdam in 2010, now staffed with a General Manager EMEA and several, dedicated sales representatives. Today, Turning is home to over 200 employees and has delivered more than six million ResponseCard clickers to K-12 schools, universities and businesses worldwide.
Several factors have contributed to Turning’s success. Flagship product TurningPoint was created to run seamlessly with PowerPoint, an innovation in the field. The software is simple enough so that if you know how to use PowerPoint, you can use TurningPoint. The simplicity of the product was also maintained when additional applications for polling with any program and conducting self-paced polling were developed. Initially considered a product for the corporate environment only, Turning’s solutions were positioned in the educational market as well, shifting the focus to an interactive classroom where all students could participate without feeling singled out. Instructors and administrators are also able to track student progress with an extensive reporting system.
Hardware was also critical to the success of Turning Technologies, transforming brick size keypads connected to a receiver through a series of wires into credit card size keypads that operated on radio frequency (RF) technology. Turning’s ResponseCard clickers are lightweight, durable and reliable – now the industry standard. Its most recent innovation in hardware, ResponseCard NXT, offers advanced capabilities such as cell phone style text entry and self-paced testing.
Turning continues to remain innovative in the marketplace. The company has adopted an agile approach that allows them to respond to a dynamic marketplace with emerging needs. Recently, Turning expanded its line of products to offer a comprehensive portfolio of assessment delivery and data collection solutions for any environment. The latest release of TurningPointconsolidates the company’s most popular software programs into one, simple interface for polling in PowerPoint, polling in any application and self-paced polling. Turning also recently released Triton Data Collection System, a highly secure, no to low bandwidth data collection system that is complimentary to existing polling solutions. Developed as the most sophisticated product to date, Triton is anticipated to influence K-12 standardized testing, but will also lend itself to university environments with midterms, finals and course evaluations as well as compliance, certification and licensing exams for corporations.
As markets have become increasingly sophisticated in the requirements necessary for the best solutions, Turning has emerged and is continuing to establish itself as the dominant global leader in the response industry. Independent research firm Futuresource Consulting confirmed its number one marketing position in a first quarter 2012 report. The report verifies that Turning has grown its number one position for the seventh consecutive calendar quarter. During the first quarter, over 34% of all “clicker” response devices shipped worldwide were distributed from Turning Technologies, more than the number two and number three providers combined.
